To mark the 800th anniversary of St Mary the Virgin, Ivinghoe, the Beacon Community Choir will be performing Stabat Mater by the popular and engaging Welsh composer of ‘Adiemus’, Karl Jenkins, on Good Friday 2020. Based on the 13th century poem, the title is an abbreviation of the first line, ‘Stabat Mater Dolorosa – the sorrowful mother was standing …’. This text, one of the most powerful and immediate of medieval poems, meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ’s mother, during his crucifixion. Jenkins has taken this ancient text and interweaves it with modern text settings in English, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic, for soloist, choir and organ.
Full of melodious and inspiring music, this moving and dramatic work expresses the pain at the heart of the Easter story.
