Thames Valley Police is appealing for people to be sensible and stay safe near open water, especially during the summer holidays when warmer weather might make it tempting to take a dip in a lake, quarry, river or canal. Aylesbury Vale has plenty of excellent swimming pools and leisure centres; these provide the cleanest and safest environment for swimming. We are reminding members of the public to be aware of the following:
- 60% of all drownings occur in canals, lakes and rivers.
- You can drown in just a few centimetres of water.
- If you fall or jump into the water, the cold will shock your body, making your muscles seize up so you can’t move.
- You could easily cut yourself on rubbish or rocks and you may become ill due to bacteria in the water.
